When someone truly believes they can do something, they almost always do it. If he thinks something is impossible regardless of how much effort he puts in, he won't believe he can succeed. Our day-to-day effectiveness is greatly impacted by our beliefs about ourselves and the world around us.
Many people, for instance, recognize that their beliefs and values have the capacity to influence their health. Common negative beliefs that can lead to health problems, such as substance abuse, being perpetually tired, lowered immune systems, and stress are quite straightforward to detect. It is unclear, however, how one would go about changing self-defeating beliefs into health-promoting beliefs.
Our beliefs not only shape, influence, or even determine our overall intelligence, health, relationships, creativity, and success, but they also profoundly influence how happy, healthy, and successful we are. And yet, if we truly believe that our beliefs are powerful influences in our lives, how do we take control of them and prevent them from dominating us? Most of our beliefs are installed when we are young by our parents, teachers, social institutions, and the media.
